Chlamydia Definition

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. It is the most commonly reported infectious disease in the United States. Some strains of C. trachomatis can also cause trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can lead to blindness.

Introduction Chlamydia trachomatis ( C. trachomatis ) is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes significant human disease (Everett, Bush et al. 1999). This pathogen is usually categorized by its major outer membrane protein (MOMP) antigen, and serovars D though K infect the mucosal columnar epithelial cells of the urogenital tract (Linhares and Witkin 2010). Though C. trachomatis infection can be treated using several antibiotic regimens, the World Health Organization considers it to be the world’s most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease, infecting approximately 90 million people worldwide (Gerbase, Rowley et al. 1998).
